The FAA outlines specific criteria required to obtain a Private Pilot’s License in CFR §61.102-120

Whether you want to become a professional pilot or fly for fun, it all starts here! Private pilots are able to fly single-engine aircraft in good weather conditions. The FAA’s outlined criteria to obtain your Private certificate are:

• Age: 17 Years (16 to Fly Solo)

• Total Flight Time: 40 Hours

• Instruction Flight Time: 20 Hours

• Solo Flight Time: 10 Hours

• Third-Class FAA Medical Certificate

• FAA Written Test

• FAA Practical Test (Checkride)

These are only minimums. Most pilots take 40-50 hours to obtain their license.
